This year the RSSU Student Grandmasters’ Cup was dedicated to the memory of Alexander Pochinok for the first time. He was the Head of the Ministry of Labour of Russia and one of the creators of the Department of chess in the RSSU.
The winner of the tournament represents Armenia, GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan scoring 6 of 9 possible points. Russian chess player Daniil Dubov had a chance to take first place, but he unable to outplay Ter-Sahakyan in the last round (the game ended in a draw), and thus scored only 5.5 points. With this result he took second.
Olexandr Bortnyk scored 5 points to became the bronze medalist. Thanks to better tie-break indicators he outran Ulvi Bajarani (Azerbaijan) and Daniel Sadzikowski (Poland), both of whom had the same score for places 4 and 5 correspondingly.
Irine Kharisma Sukandar was beyond comparison in the A. Pochinok Memorial Women’ Student Grandmaster Tournament. She won six times and finished three games in a draw, scoring 7.5 points.
Alina Kashlinskaya from Russia with 5.5 points is the silver medalist of the tournament.
Gunay Mammadzada from Azerbaijan won third place. She earned 5 points and the tie-break rules allowed her to outrun two other chess players having the same number of points - Petra Papp (Hungary) and Dinara Saduakassova (Kazakhstan).
It should be also noted that both tournaments were held in a round-robin format with the participation of ten young chess players in each tournament.
